HOW TO KEEP BANANAS FRESH FOR TWO WEEKS USING A SIMPLE METHOD
The secret to keeping bananas fresh for up to two weeks: Experts reveal a simple method.
As is well known, excessively warm environments accelerate the ripening process of fruits.
Most bananas sold in supermarkets are green, but they turn yellow quickly once brought home. Within a day or two, brown spots begin to appear on them. However, according to a report by The Mirror, there are several ways to slow down this process and keep bananas fresh for up to two weeks.
“First, when shopping at the supermarket, you should opt for bananas that are not sold in bags. Although many supermarkets are moving away from such packaging, bags—even those with holes—accelerate the ripening of bananas,” the article explains.
According to experts, bananas release a gas called ethylene, which speeds up the ripening process. When stored in a plastic bag, this gas accelerates ripening even further, causing brown spots to form on the bananas within a day or two.
A food hygiene expert from High Speed Training also emphasized that bananas should not be stored in a container. They noted that bananas should be kept on a kitchen counter at room temperature, away from humidity, direct sunlight, or heat sources.
“Any place that is too warm will accelerate the ripening process, so avoid storing bananas near an oven or heating appliances,” the expert said.
The expert added that separating the bananas from the bunch can also help them stay “as fresh as possible” for a much longer time. “Ethylene gas is released from the banana stem; you can wrap the stems in plastic cling film or a plastic bag to slow the release of this gas and prevent premature ripening. This reduces the amount of gas that can penetrate the fruit, thereby helping the bananas stay fresh for longer,” the expert emphasized.
