SECURITY EXPERTS RECOMMEND DISABLING A SMARTPHONE FEATURE
Even security experts recommend disabling this smartphone feature: Here’s why
If you are leaving home and do not plan to use Wi-Fi, it is a good idea to turn it off until you return.
Many users leave Wi-Fi enabled even when they are away from home. However, the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) recommends disabling wireless interfaces—including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth—when they are not in use.
According to CHIP.de, German consumer protection organizations also support this recommendation. There are several reasons to turn off Wi-Fi when you are away from home:
Battery savings. When Wi-Fi is turned off, the device does not consume power searching for or maintaining wireless connections.
Password protection. Rogue access points pose a threat, as attackers can use them to intercept sensitive data.
Protecting your home address. If an attacker gains access to the list of saved Wi-Fi networks, they may be able to determine the phone owner’s home address. Public directories of mapped wireless networks can be used for this purpose.
How to Automatically Turn Off Wi-Fi on an iPhone
iPhone users can manually toggle Wi-Fi on or off via the Control Center or the Settings app. However, doing this regularly can be cumbersome. Furthermore, when you turn off Wi-Fi via the Control Center, Apple automatically re-enables it the following day, so this is not always a long-term solution.A more convenient option is to set up an automation in the Shortcuts app. This allows your smartphone to automatically turn off Wi-Fi when you leave home and turn it back on when you return. To do this, create an automation that triggers when you leave a selected location. For the action, choose the Wi-Fi setting and set it to “Off.” To reconnect your smartphone to your wireless network upon returning home, create a second automation that triggers when you arrive at that specified location.
This method eliminates the need to manually turn Wi-Fi on and off every single time.
How to Manage Wi-Fi on Android?
On Android smartphones, you can also manually turn off Wi-Fi whenever a wireless connection is not needed. Some devices include a feature that automatically turns Wi-Fi back on when a known network is detected; this option is typically found within the network settings.
However, there is no universal way to automatically disable Wi-Fi based on location across all Android phones. As an alternative, you could use NFC tags or automation apps like IFTTT.
For this reason, even security experts recommend disabling Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC when they are not in use. While keeping these modules enabled does not necessarily lead to data leaks, reducing the number of active wireless interfaces helps lower potential risks.
Therefore, if you are leaving home and do not plan to use Wi-Fi, it is a good idea to turn it off until you return. This simple habit can enhance the security of your personal data and slightly extend your smartphone’s battery life.
