CHROMIUM BASED BROWSERS PERFORMED BETTER THAN CHROME

An expert tested all major Chromium browsers: one significantly outperformed Chrome.
The comparison included Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi, Opera and Brave.
Google Chrome remains the most popular browser thanks to Google’s extensive ecosystem and convenient syncing across devices. However, it has worthy competitors that offer more ad-blocking and privacy features.

A MakeUseOf author tested five Chromium-based browsers and concluded that Brave is the most successful alternative to Chrome.

The comparison included Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi, Opera, and Brave. All use the same underlying engine, so the main differences lie in additional features, privacy settings, extension support, and RAM consumption.
The author cited support for the original uBlock Origin extension as Brave’s main advantage. It blocks ads, trackers, and pop-ups. Chrome, on the other hand, has switched to the new Manifest V3 extension standard, meaning the original uBlock Origin is no longer available in the extension store. uBlock Origin Lite is available in Chrome and Edge, but its features differ from the full version.
Another key advantage of Brave is its protection against tracking using its browser fingerprint. This method allows websites to identify users without traditional cookies by collecting unique characteristics of their device and software. According to the test results, Brave was the only one of the five browsers that consistently demonstrated randomization of this fingerprint. This makes tracking more difficult, although it does not ensure complete anonymity online.

The expert paid special attention to RAM consumption. In one test, he opened 25 identical tabs in Chrome and Brave without extensions. Chrome used about 8.2 GB of RAM, while Brave used about 4.5 GB. Therefore, Brave consumed almost 45% less RAM.

Each of the five browsers has its advantages, but when used side by side, their shortcomings become more apparent. Vivaldi offers the most extensive interface customization and tab management options. Edge blocks background tracking, and Opera’s sidebar can be useful for those accustomed to its tools. Chrome, on the other hand, works seamlessly with most accounts.
However, Brave does have its drawbacks. The author had to disable several built-in features, including Brave Rewards, the Leo AI assistant, the news feed, and VPN suggestions. Furthermore, the built-in protection sometimes disrupted the functionality of certain websites, requiring Shields to be disabled for those.

Ultimately, the MakeUseOf author settled on Brave and continues to use it on all his devices. Despite some questionable decisions, this browser suits his needs better than Chrome.

Users previously noticed that Google Chrome had begun downloading a 20GB AI model to their hard drive without permission. However, if users found it in their files and deleted it, Google would reinstall it after an update.
