Freezer iced up: why do they put aluminum foil inside?
Aluminum foil will help defrost your freezer faster.
Ice buildup in the freezer not only takes up space but also significantly increases energy consumption. Most people try to solve this problem with hot water, towels , or even sharp objects. However, as Blikk writes , a simple solution is currently gaining popularity on social media: using aluminum foil.
Why aluminum foil?
Aluminum foil is found in almost every home and is useful not only for cooking but also for defrosting the freezer. Aluminum is an excellent heat conductor, so heat reaches the ice layer more quickly and evenly. This makes it easier to remove ice from the freezer walls.
How does this trick work?
First, unplug the freezer and remove all food. Protect the floor around the appliance with towels or rags to prevent water from spilling into the kitchen. Then, line the inside of the freezer with aluminum foil and place a bowl of warm (but not hot) water in the center, or carefully spray warm water onto the ice.
“In just a few minutes, you’ll see the ice begin to break off on its own. This method is not only fast but also safe, as you won’t have to fiddle with sharp objects that could easily damage the interior of the freezer,” the publication claims.
When should you defrost your freezer?
Experts recommend defrosting your freezer when the ice layer reaches one centimeter thick. Even such a thin layer of ice can increase energy consumption by 10–15%, resulting in significant costs. In most cases, defrosting your freezer once or twice a year is sufficient, but if ice builds up more quickly, you may need to defrost it more frequently.
