SHOULD WE EAT BEFORE WORKOUT TO LOSE WEIGHT OR BUILD MUSCLE?

Should you eat before a workout to lose weight or build muscle?
Everyone has different goals in the gym: some want to lose weight, others dream of toned muscles, and others are trying to improve their posture. The results of your workout are influenced not only by your effort but also by your daily diet.
Even if you work hard at the gym every day but don’t improve your diet, you’re unlikely to lose weight. Physical exercise is great, but your final results depend entirely on your diet, habits, and sleep quality.

When should you really exercise: before or after meals? And how do breakfast and dinner affect the quality of your workouts? What happens if you exercise on an empty stomach? Experts told Doctor Peter about these issues.
It’s not just the time that matters, but also the type of load.
When and what to eat before a workout is one of the key factors for effective training. It’s important to consider the goal of the workout, its intensity, and individual body characteristics.
“For strength and high-intensity training, pre-workout nutrition is critical.Proteins and carbohydrates provide muscles with amino acids and energy, which helps maintain performance and reduce the risk of injury.”Athletes who maintain this balance demonstrate more consistent strength and endurance performance,” says the expert.

Training immediately after a large meal reduces effectiveness : blood flow is diverted to digestion, causing discomfort, and possibly impairing concentration and reaction time. To avoid this, it’s best to limit yourself to a light snack 30–60 minutes before training. It should be nutritious enough to provide energy without overloading the stomach.

Suitable for:

banana;

natural yogurt;

protein bar;

small smoothie with fruit and protein.
Is it okay to eat after an evening workout?
After an evening workout, it is also important to support muscle recovery.The best option is a small protein snack., which helps restore and grow muscle tissue.
“Overeating carbohydrates in the evening can lead to excess fat accumulation, so it’s better to choose foods high in protein and moderate in carbohydrates. Water plays an equally important role—it supports heart function, concentration, and body temperature regulation . A lack of fluid increases fatigue and reduces the effectiveness of exercise,” says Anastasia Gulyanina.

Another important point is the time of training in relation to biorhythms.Morning exercises speed up metabolism and give you energy for the whole day, while evening ones are suitable for those who are more productive at this time.The key is to tailor your regimen to your individual needs and goals, monitor your body’s response, and adjust your exercise routine and diet. Regularity and moderation help maintain motivation and prevent burnout.

To eat or not to eat?
It’s a completely different story when you eat beforehand. Eating 1-3 hours before exercise provides the body with the energy it needs for vigorous physical activity . However, this approach has both advantages and disadvantages, says Alexander Sidorov.

Benefits of eating before a workout.

Energy and endurance . Carbohydrates from food are broken down into glucose and stored in the muscles and liver as glycogen. This “fuel” allows you to train longer and more intensely without feeling depleted.

Muscle tissue protection . Amino acids from protein entering the bloodstream serve as building blocks. With available protein, the body is less likely to break down its own muscles for energy (catabolism), which is especially important during strength training.

Stabilizing blood sugar levels . Eating food prevents a sharp drop in glucose during intense exercise, reducing the risk of dizziness, weakness, and nausea.

Improved performance . Research shows that athletes who eat before training are able to lift more weight or run longer distances than those who train on an empty stomach.
Stomach heaviness and discomfort . If you eat too much or choose the “wrong” foods—fatty, fried, or high-fiber—the food won’t have time to digest. During exercise, blood flows to the muscles rather than the stomach, which slows digestion and causes heaviness, heartburn, or cramping.

Decreased intensity . The body expends energy digesting food. If you start exercising immediately after eating, some of its energy will be diverted from the muscles to the gastrointestinal tract.

Risk of reflux . When performing exercises lying down, such as bench presses or intense abdominal exercises like crunches, a full stomach can cause acid reflux—a backflow of stomach contents into the esophagus.

Drowsiness . Eating a large meal causes a sharp spike in insulin, which can lead to a temporary decrease in alertness and concentration.

“The ideal pre-workout meal iscomplex carbohydrates(buckwheat, oatmeal, whole grain bread)in combination with easily digestible protein(chicken breast, lean fish, egg whites)1.5–2 hours before class”If you have an hour before your workout, it’s best to limit yourself to a small snack,” says the expert.
Training on an empty stomach: dangers and risks
Fasted exercise, such as morning cardio before breakfast, has become popular as a way to speed up fat burning. However, this method carries certain risks.

First, your performance decreases . The main risk is a lack of readily available energy. Without glycogen, you’ll feel fatigued more quickly and won’t be able to maintain high intensity, which will reduce the overall effectiveness of your workout.

Secondly, muscle loss occurs . With low glycogen and amino acid levels, the body begins to use not only fat but also muscle protein for fuel. This is especially critical during long cardio sessions—over 60 minutes. As a result, instead of a toned physique, you can end up with skinny fat—a thin but flabby physique.

Third, the risk of hypoglycemia increases . For people with unstable blood sugar levels, exercising on an empty stomach can trigger hypoglycemia. Symptoms include severe dizziness, blurred vision, tremors, cold sweat, and nausea. This condition can lead to loss of consciousness.

Elevated cortisol levels should also be considered . Prolonged fasting and intense exercise increase levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Chronically elevated cortisol promotes muscle breakdown, fat accumulation, especially in the abdominal area, and suppresses the immune system.

Another factor is decreased motivation . Constant weakness and dizziness during training can lead to a negative attitude toward exercise.

Should you eat before a workout if you want to lose weight or build muscle?
The answer is simple:Yes, it is necessaryThe body needs food to achieve any of these goals.

“A common myth is that you need to exercise on an empty stomach to burn fat . In reality, for weight loss, it’s the overall daily calorie deficit—expending more than you consume—that’s important, not the specific source of energy the body draws from during a particular exercise,” explains Alexander Sidorov.

If your goal is to gain muscle mass, the rules are much stricter. Muscles can’t grow without building blocks (protein) and energy (carbohydrates). In this case, it’s essential to eat before training . This is critical to preventing catabolism and providing energy for heavy lifting.
If your goal is weight loss, it’s important to understand that it ‘s not the actual act of eating before or after a workout that’s key, but the overall calorie deficit .

“It can be created through both physical activity and nutrition, and it’s usually easier to do this through nutrition. Therefore, for weight lossIt is much more important to maintain an overall calorie balance and exercise regularly, than choosing the ideal meal timing in relation to training,” says the nutritionist.

There’s no need to wait long before eating after cardio. You can eat comfortably within 10-15 minutes of your workout. There aren’t any particular benefits to waiting longer.
If your goal is to gain muscle mass, it’s important to ensure your body gets enough energy and protein throughout the day . Training while extremely hungry in this situation is also not a good idea, as itmay negatively affect the quality of training and working weightsThe deciding factor here is not the time of meal intake, but the total amount of calories, protein, and exercise frequency.
By the way : when it comes to time of day, there’s no fundamental difference between morning and evening workouts. It’s much more important that the workouts are regular and fit comfortably into a person’s schedule.

“Remember that intense training on an empty stomach can be detrimental to your sleep, and heavy exercise right before bed can impair the quality of your rest,” the expert concluded.
