WHICH SIDE OF ALUMINUM FOIL SHOULD WE USE TO WRAP AND COOK FOOD?
Shiny or matte foil: experts explain whether there’s a difference when baking
Experts have explained whether it matters which side of aluminum foil you use to wrap food and bake it.
Aluminum foil is often used for packaging, storing food, and baking. However, many people don’t know the difference between the shiny and matte sides, writes Blikk .
Experts say this difference is a manufacturing process issue but has no practical significance when using aluminum foil.
Why is one side glossy and the other matte?
In the final stage of the production process, two thin layers of aluminum are rolled simultaneously, as the foil itself is so thin that it can easily tear. The surface in contact with the rollers becomes shiny, while the side where the two layers meet remains matte.
“Thus, the difference between the two sides does not mean that one of them has special properties compared to the other,” the material says.
Which side should touch the food?
Experts say it doesn’t matter which side is in contact with the food. Both glossy and matte surfaces are equally suitable for food packaging and general kitchen use.
However, some manufacturers offer aluminum foil with a special coating or surface treatment. Therefore, when using such products, please follow the instructions on the packaging.
Common Misconceptions About Aluminum Foil
Many people believe that the shiny side reflects heat better, while the matte side, on the contrary, absorbs it.
“However, with regular aluminum foil, the difference between the two surfaces is so slight that it’s not a significant factor in everyday kitchen use. Therefore, when wrapping food or baking, there’s no need to pay attention to whether the shiny or matte side faces in,” the article emphasized.
